Ms. Wendel is a Math and Psychology Subject Expert Teacher, and a Master Teacher. She is a part of the fabric of our school, having been here since we opened. Ms. Wendel is a trusted advisor of our math sequence programmatics and curriculum.
In the beginning of the school year, I always give my Psychology students an assignment that asks them a couple of questions about themselves so that I can get to know them better. One of the questions is ‘Where do you see yourself in five, ten, and fifteen years?’ In my mind, I was thinking I would get back answers of doctor and lawyer, and, since we are in Silicon Valley, numerous software engineering positions. However, what the majority of my students submitted was surprising: Venture Capitalist. Even more intriguing is that it is not just a distant dream as you might expect—but they actually have a concrete plan on how to get there.
Mr. Meyerowitz, a Subject Expert History Teacher and Master Teacher, is one of our resident experts on research methods. He was instrumental in bringing the AP Capstone course to campus in our second year. Mr. Meyerowitz has taught both AP Research and AP Seminar at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley. He is also a National Board Certified Teacher.
Every spring, dozens of our seniors present authentic research that they have spent much of the year composing. These presentations, which have become a rite of passage for many BASIS Independent Silicon Valley graduates, are opportunities for our students to find their voices as scholars. Students work diligently with campus mentors and as interns and lab assistants off campus to pose a significant inquiry, to construct a hypothesis after engaging with extant scholarship, and to generate data and conclusions from a replicable method. While the finished product is thought provoking and may inspire future scholarship, it represents only the tip of an iceberg, a monument to their academic pursuits and training at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley.

I have often noted that one of the challenges we face when considering professional development opportunities for educators, is that the best PD examples are regularly happening in the classroom next door. I am a firm believer that we can all improve through observing others. This is especially the case with classroom instruction. Too often, administrators and professional pedagogy ‘trainers’ are too far removed from the classroom to provide authentic feedback based on experience. Essentially, for teachers, fellow professionals are regularly the best resource to support professional growth and improvement.

I don’t believe there is a group of students more academically prepared for university than those who have graduated and will graduate from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley. Our students are quite impressive; they are the hardest working students that I have ever worked with, they enjoy being intellectually stimulated, challenged and driven beyond their academic comfort zone.
