We are so excited to announce the Director of Operations, Mr. Robert Wood, for our new Lower School Campus for the 2022 - 2023 school year.
Mr. Wood joins us from the Silicon Valley Upper School where he was a Subject Expert Teacher in Economics and Logic. He has a decade of experience working in private schools across the Bay Area.
Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Mr. Wood to ask all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!
Mr. Wood, though our Upper School families know you well, please provide us with a quick introduction to our new families at the Lower School.
While I moved around California a lot as a kid, I have lived in the South Bay for the last twenty years. While attending San Jose State pursuing a B.S. in Business with an emphasis in finance, I worked at another local private school. That is where I fell in love with education and opted to pursue a career in education over finance.
Over the course of the last decade, I have worked with and taught virtually every grade level! I look forward to combining my classroom experience and finance background to ensure the school year goes smoothly. When I’m not working, I enjoy hiking, camping, and walks with my wife and my dog Mishka.
We are so excited to announce our first member of the Student Affairs Team for the new BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Lower Campus! Mr. Joshua Henriquez will be joining as the Director of Student Affairs for our new campus for the 2022 - 2023 school year.
Mr. Henriquez has years of experience in and out of the classroom. He originally joined BASIS Independent Schools as a teacher before transitioning to Dean of Students for the Middle School at our Upper School Campus.
Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Mr. Henriquez to ask all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!
Mr. Henriquez, we are so excited to have you join our new lower school campus. When did you originally join BASIS Independent Schools?
I joined BISV in 2018 because I was attracted to the acclaimed reputation of BINS schools. Two factors were key in bringing me to a BINS school: teacher autonomy and student achievement. As a classroom teacher, I found the model of teacher autonomy appealing. It was refreshing to hear that while there were of course curriculum standards to reach, teachers had the freedom to choose how they reached those standards. The achievements of BISV students were also a huge draw for me. I was impressed that students at BISV were able to consistently outperform their peers in both national and international metrics.
I began my time at BISV as a Teaching Fellow before teaching middle school history for three years. Teaching here opened my eyes even more to just how impressive our students and faculty are. Grade level and departmental meetings exposed me to a wealth of experience and knowledge from other teachers that general training could not provide. I also had the opportunity to be the advisor for a variety of clubs and even coached our middle school basketball teams in a winning season. I always appreciate opportunities to support our Bobcats outside of the classroom and see them excel in areas of passion.
We are so excited to announce the Director of Academic Programs, Ms. Anh Than, for our new Lower School Campus for the 2022 - 2023 school year.
Ms. Than is currently the Dean of Students for Grades 10 - 12 at our Upper School as well as our Senior Project Coordinator. Prior to joining the Support Team, she served as the Curriculum Coordinator on the Academic Programs team.
Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Ms. Than to ask all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!
Ms. Than, new families are so excited to learn more about you and your role at the Lower School! Please provide us with a quick introduction.
Of course! I am originally from Vietnam. At the age of 13, my parents made the difficult decision for us to start a new journey to America. Leaving my childhood home was difficult, and Vietnam will forever be in my heart, but I am also blessed to call the Bay Area my second home.
This challenging experience taught me one of the most important lessons I have ever learned, which is to adapt and always move forward in life. After high school, I went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from San Jose State University. A memorable part of my college experience was participating in a research project at the Stanford Graduate School of Education as a research assistant! Over the years, I've learned to embrace unexpected adventures as life is always changing. As I think about moving to our new campus next year, I look forward to the many new challenges and experiences that it will bring!
We are so excited to announce Ms. Cindy Liu, our current Head of Operations at the Upper School, will be expanding her role as she oversees both the Lower and Upper School campuses.
Ms. Liu has years of school operational experience and has already been working behind the scenes with the opening of our new campus. We are excited to finally announce this new addition to our administration team for the 2022 - 2023 school year.
Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Ms. Liu and asked all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!
Ms. Liu, our Upper School families already know you so well. Please introduce yourself to our new incoming families for BISV Lower.
