Meet the Staff: Mr. Wood, Director of Operations

Robert Wood Staff PhotoWe are so excited to announce the Director of Operations, Mr. Robert Wood, for our new Lower School Campus for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

Mr. Wood joins us from the Silicon Valley Upper School where he was a Subject Expert Teacher in Economics and Logic. He has a decade of experience working in private schools across the Bay Area.

Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Mr. Wood to ask all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!

Mr. Wood, though our Upper School families know you well, please provide us with a quick introduction to our new families at the Lower School.

While I moved around California a lot as a kid, I have lived in the South Bay for the last twenty years. While attending San Jose State pursuing a B.S. in Business with an emphasis in finance, I worked at another local private school. That is where I fell in love with education and opted to pursue a career in education over finance.

Over the course of the last decade, I have worked with and taught virtually every grade level! I look forward to combining my classroom experience and finance background to ensure the school year goes smoothly. When I’m not working, I enjoy hiking, camping, and walks with my wife and my dog Mishka.

Meet the Staff: Mr. Henriquez, Director of Student Affairs

JOSHUA_HENRIQUEZ copyWe are so excited to announce our first member of the Student Affairs Team for the new BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Lower Campus! Mr. Joshua Henriquez will be joining as the Director of Student Affairs for our new campus for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

Mr. Henriquez has years of experience in and out of the classroom. He originally joined BASIS Independent Schools as a teacher before transitioning to Dean of Students for the Middle School at our Upper School Campus.

Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Mr. Henriquez to ask all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!

Mr. Henriquez, we are so excited to have you join our new lower school campus. When did you originally join BASIS Independent Schools?

I joined BISV in 2018 because I was attracted to the acclaimed reputation of BINS schools. Two factors were key in bringing me to a BINS school: teacher autonomy and student achievement. As a classroom teacher, I found the model of teacher autonomy appealing. It was refreshing to hear that while there were of course curriculum standards to reach, teachers had the freedom to choose how they reached those standards. The achievements of BISV students were also a huge draw for me. I was impressed that students at BISV were able to consistently outperform their peers in both national and international metrics.

I began my time at BISV as a Teaching Fellow before teaching middle school history for three years. Teaching here opened my eyes even more to just how impressive our students and faculty are. Grade level and departmental meetings exposed me to a wealth of experience and knowledge from other teachers that general training could not provide. I also had the opportunity to be the advisor for a variety of clubs and even coached our middle school basketball teams in a winning season. I always appreciate opportunities to support our Bobcats outside of the classroom and see them excel in areas of passion.

Congratulations, on being a founding faculty member at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Lower School! What are you most looking forward to in this new position?

I am thrilled to be part of the SVL founding team. One of the things I am passionate about is nurturing future innovators. I am really looking forward to engaging the student community with a hands-on engineering curriculum that is specially crafted for younger kids to help them build creative confidence, gain 21st-century skills, and innovate fearlessly. I believe there are no right or wrong answers. Every engineering problem has many possible solutions and multiple ways to reach those solutions. What is important at the end of each experience is not the success or failure of the project but the journey and critical thinking skills learned on the way. At the core of my philosophy is the idea that it's ok to fail, then learn from it and try again. Not to mention that I look forward to the students having a blast which helps them learn and retain knowledge for longer.
