We are so excited to announce the Director of Academic Programs, Ms. Anh Than, for our new Lower School Campus for the 2022 - 2023 school year.
Ms. Than is currently the Dean of Students for Grades 10 - 12 at our Upper School as well as our Senior Project Coordinator. Prior to joining the Support Team, she served as the Curriculum Coordinator on the Academic Programs team.
Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Ms. Than to ask all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!
Ms. Than, new families are so excited to learn more about you and your role at the Lower School! Please provide us with a quick introduction.
Of course! I am originally from Vietnam. At the age of 13, my parents made the difficult decision for us to start a new journey to America. Leaving my childhood home was difficult, and Vietnam will forever be in my heart, but I am also blessed to call the Bay Area my second home.
This challenging experience taught me one of the most important lessons I have ever learned, which is to adapt and always move forward in life. After high school, I went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from San Jose State University. A memorable part of my college experience was participating in a research project at the Stanford Graduate School of Education as a research assistant! Over the years, I've learned to embrace unexpected adventures as life is always changing. As I think about moving to our new campus next year, I look forward to the many new challenges and experiences that it will bring!
When did you join BASIS Independent Silicon Valley?
I joined BASIS Independent Silicon Valley as the Curriculum Coordinator in 2019. As a member of the Academic Programs team, we manage everything curricular on campus, from the creation of teacher syllabi to the organization of Pre-Comprehensive, Comprehensive, and AP testing. Some of my specific responsibilities were to take care of the day-to-day classroom assignments and to assist the team in meeting the needs of the teachers and their students. In 2021, I transitioned to the Student Affairs Team. As Dean of Students and Senior Project Coordinator, I've gained valuable perspectives about our student life and school culture. I truly appreciate that I have had the opportunity to work in both departments because it has given me insight into different aspects of the school. All of our roles are connected; we are often just supporting different sides of the same situation.
What will be some of your tasks as Director of Academic Programs?
As the Director of Academic Programs, my mission will be to uphold the quality of our education and teaching delivery; and I will work closely with the Curriculum Coordinator on all major projects. My team will be responsible for managing and implementing the curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs that we use to monitor learning outcomes for our students. We will also support our teachers by providing resources and tools which aid them in providing excellent academics to all of our students. We believe in a collaborative work environment, so I will also work with the other departments and the leadership team to promote positive school culture. While my primary role will be focused on academics, I look forward to building our new community, and celebrating our first year together.
How will you be assisting with the setup of the new school?
Before the start of the new school year, I will be actively assisting in hiring and training teachers. All Director staff will be focusing on supporting the new educators who join us for the 2022-2023 academic year. I personally will be spearheading the creation of all student and teacher schedules, managing classroom assignments, overseeing student registration and recordkeeping, and other necessary logistics to get our new classrooms up and running. We have a lot of work to do in order to make our Lower School Campus ready to welcome our youngest Bobcats, but I am so excited to work alongside my administrative team to get it all done!
Once school begins, why would parents reach out to you?
Parents are always welcome to contact me if they have any questions about curriculum and assessment information, which could include things like their child's standardized test results. Perhaps a more common reason that a parent might reach out to me is if they have questions about their student’s schedule, or are wondering when report cards or and progress report updates will be released.
Finally, what are your goals for our students?
My goal is to inspire the next generation to be life-long learners - that's why I went into education! I am so pleased to join the new campus, and look forward to empowering students by providing them with a productive learning environment. I can't wait to watch them grow!
