CINDY_LIU copyWe are so excited to announce Ms. Cindy Liu, our current Head of Operations at the Upper School, will be expanding her role as she oversees both the Lower and Upper School campuses.

Ms. Liu has years of school operational experience and has already been working behind the scenes with the opening of our new campus. We are excited to finally announce this new addition to our administration team for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

Our Head of School, Ms. Brooklynn Titus, sat down with Ms. Liu and asked all the questions that we know our new families are excited to have answered!

Ms. Liu, our Upper School families already know you so well. Please introduce yourself to our new incoming families for BISV Lower.

Hello Bobcat Families! My name is Cindy Liu and I am the Head of Operations for both BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Upper and Lower School. I have called the Bay Area home for the past 10 years. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley Haas School of Business, my Master of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, and my Masters in Education Entrepreneurship from University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. And I recently became a mom to my beautiful daughter Carli!

Tell us a little bit about what you do as the Head of Operations.

In my role, I oversee various teams that ensure both the smooth and efficient daily operation of the school. This means I oversee the Auxiliary Team, Facility Team, Operations Team, and Technology Team - it takes a lot of teams to run a school! I am also responsible for human resources and finances at the school level. It is my greatest passion and joy to support staff members, students, and their parents.

How long have you been a part of BASIS Independent Silicon Valley?

I joined during a challenging time for those that worked in education! I started in the summer of 2020 as the Head of Operations. It was definitely a difficult time trying to keep staff, students, and parents all connected even though we weren't on campus together. The virtual world allowed us to get creative with clubs and social events and even classroom activities. I am so happy to be back in person now, but I am so proud of what our team accomplished during that challenging time.

But opening a new school is actually not a new challenge to you! Tell us about your past experience in this.

Yes, back in 2018 I participated in the opening of a progressive school in the Bay Area and was the founding stage Director of Operations. In 2019 I was also involved in the early planning stages of a new charter school campus. It is a true passion of mine to create high-quality educational opportunities, like BISV, so I have been actively engaged in conversations about designing and founding schools with U.S. TK - Grade 12 educators for quite some time now.

What have you been working on currently for the new campus?

Currently, I have been working with Ms. Titus on building the new school's founding team. It has been very exciting to encounter so many talented individuals who are eager and passionate to join the new campus. We are already feeling confident in having a strong founding year with a rockstar team and I am excited to see how it will grow over time!

I have also been working on building the foundation for the new school's operational structure. Everything from vendor solicitation, dismissal process design, campus-to-campus shuttle program, and club and sport offerings. It is uplifting to see a new school come to fruition and I am enjoying every step. Ms. Titus and I are also collaborating with our construction team to plan for the projects happening over summertime.

Once the school opens, what will be some of your daily tasks as Head of Operations?

The best part of my job is that I do not have a typical day. My daily tasks vary drastically depending on the priorities I hold at a given time and the season we are in at the school. One day I may be working with my team to put a finishing touch to a school-wide event. Another day I may be in many employee conversations to provide feedback for their professional growth. I could be creating the budget for the new school year at a strategic level, and then jumping in the parking lot to help with traffic! I have the opportunity to oversee various functional areas in the school; it's always challenging but fun to juggle so many tasks.

Will you have an Operations Team at the new campus to assist you with juggling all that?

Oh yes! Lower School will have its own Operations Team consisting of the front office staff, monitors, and an Operations Director. I could never balance all that our department does on both campuses without my amazing team.

Finally, when should parents reach out to you or your team?

If families ever have questions regarding school operations, auxiliary programs, transportation, or tuition, please reach out. I will support you the best I can, or redirect you to the right person!
