A Wonderful Wellness Week

We had a wonderful Wellness Week promoting heath, wellness, and self-care to students, teachers, and parents. Each day had a theme and various activities that went with that theme. We also paired it with Spirit Week to get the students excited about wellness and Spring Break.

Friendly Competition Ignites in Annual Door Decorating Contest

The second annual BASIS Independent McLean Door Decorating Contest created holiday spirit and excitement for the coming Winter Break. Early in December, students created their own teams and claimed a teacher’s door. Together students brainstormed and brought to live a variety of winter and holiday themed doors. Some were themed to the teacher in the classroom, some to holiday classics, some traditional, and some to the subject taught in the room!

Spotlight On Auxiliary Programs

Driven by the diverse interests of our students, BASIS Independent McLean offered over 50 extracurricular clubs, sports, and activities in its founding year!

Red-Tailed Hawks not only work hard, but also play hard. Nearly 80% of our students, from preschool through grade 11, chose to participate in at least one auxiliary program. More than half of all students participated in at least two enrichment activities. Year-round clubs included Math Clubs (for middle and upper school), Yoga, Lego Club, Quiz Bowl, and Classics Club.

Our after school music program, led by our own Mr. Junsay, offered individualized instruction for percussion, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, and strings. Music students of all experience levels showcased their efforts to their parents and peers at the Spring Concert. From "Hot Cross Buns" for our beginners, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and the "Star Wars" main theme for our advanced musicians.

Highlights From Our Founding Year

Our founding year was marked by incredible academic, artistic, and athletic accomplishments--and we had a lot of fun in the process.

It's difficult to choose just a few, but let's look back at some of the highlights from our first school year.

Connections

Learning Expert Teacher Dolores Peck's second graders studied seafaring transportation and then connected math, engineering, and art by making a seven foot model of a clipper ship main mast.

Service Week at BASIS Independent

When a student brings us a great idea, we do everything we can to make it a reality. Third grader at our sister school BASIS Independent Brooklyn, Eden E. approached faculty asking if she could have a Bake Sale to raise money for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Cancer Center. She came with a written proposal, a volunteer list and a poster. Below, an administrator's experience with supporting and nurturing the idea above and beyond just a singular act of kindness.

A Limitless Future: The BASIS Independent Student Video

We are excited to unveil to you the fruits of a couple of non-stop days in October - our BASIS Independent videos! Recently, we shared with you the first two videos in the series, the BASIS Independent Parent Video and the BASIS Independent Faculty Video.

Here's a refresher on the project: Over the course of three days, we filmed three separate videos: one about the family experience with our school, the teacher perspective on what it's like to work here, and the student perspective on what it is like to learn here. We love these videos and hope you do, too.

They are raw, spur of the moment, unscripted reflections of what it's like to be a part of the BASIS Independent community.

They breathe life into Education Redefined and demonstrate what happens when you combine an accelerated, rigorous curriculum with exceptional, expert educators in an environment of support and deep respect for the art and science of learning.
