The BASIS Independent McLean Middle School Science Olympiad team is headed to this year’s virtual state championships! The team has placed well in many competitions throughout the season, and the team's overall second place the February’s Regional Tournament secured their advancement to states.
Though many things about fall 2020 were unfamiliar, our students continued to shine through clubs and contests that were held virtually. Here we highlight our students’ accomplishments from the first part of the 2020-2021 school year. Congratulations, Red-Tailed Hawks!
Eight seniors in BASIS Independent McLean’s Class of 2021 have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 34,000 students are recognized as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT.
In just five short years, BASIS Independent McLean, home of the Red-Tailed Hawks, has surged ahead and is now ranked among the best high schools in Virginia and the Washington D.C. Area, according to Niche’s 2021 Best High School Rankings.
BASIS Independent McLean has earned the #2 ranking for Best High Schools for STEM in Virginia while rising to the #3 ranking for Best College Prep Private High Schools in Virginia, and #3 ranking for Best Private K-12 Schools in Virginia. Additionally, our school ranked as the #6 Best Private High School in Virginia.
The 2019-20 school year was certainly an unprecedented one. A global pandemic disrupted BASIS Independent McLean’s final trimester and pushed the school to distance learning; however, from August to early March, students, staff, and families participated in a robust on-campus community.
Miller H. ’20 has been named an Extraordinary Teen by Arlington Magazine. The magazine cites that his love of game creation started as early as grade 1 with a modified game of Tag. Twelve years later, Miller is a published game designer.
Spring 2020 Student Accomplishments
Though we could not be on campus together this past spring trimester, our students continued to test their knowledge, help others, and earn recognition. Here we highlight our students’ accomplishments from spring 2020.
In addition to the two Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, 13 BASIS Independent McLean seniors have been named Commended Students. This means more than 50% of BASIS Independent McLean’s Class of 2020 are recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Approximately 34,000 students are recognized nationally as Commended Students for their exception academic promise. Roughly 16,000 students across the nation have qualified as Semifinalists.

Félicitations! Gratulationes! Felicitaciones! More than 100 BASIS Independent McLean students received honors based on their performance on a 2019 national language exam. Every student in grade 7 and above chooses a language (French, Latin, Mandarin, or Spanish) to study, and each April, our students participate in the national French, Latin, and Spanish exams, which are taken by students across the country. We are thrilled to see our students thrive in learning various languages.
