Pop culture, college football, chemistry, opera, ancient history—the BASIS Independent McLean Quiz Bowl team is ready for it all! The Quiz Bowl team will compete in the 2018 High School National Championship Tournament and the Small School National Championship Tournament. The team’s third place standing at the Mountain Vista Governor's School Open II in January earned them a spot at these national events hosted by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments in Atlanta in May.

Our Quiz Bowl team has had a very exciting sophomore year. The founding members have been joined by several new players, and together the 10-member team has participated in half a dozen tournaments in northern Virginia and Maryland. The team has a consistent winning record, and has been a semi-finalist in several events.

Team members include Jamal B. ’21, Sam K. ’22, Peter L. ’21, Tiffany S. ’21, Charles T. ’22, Justin W. ’21, Dora X. ’21, Mimi Y. ’21, Anna Y. ’21, and Jiaming Z. ’21. Subject Expert Teacher Dr. McCaffrey advises the team.

Quiz Bowl is an academic team quiz competition that rewards individual knowledge, cooperation, and speed. Two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. A match is composed of 20 "toss-up" questions that students buzz in to answer without the help of their teammates.

We’re so proud of our students and can’t wait to see them compete later this month. Congratulations and good luck, Red-Tailed Hawks!
