Since mid-March (and for some of us even before), the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives and changed the way that we operate on a daily bases. From a trip to the grocery store to a summer family vacation, each of our daily tasks or annual events require additional thought and preparation.
As we excitedly prepare to return to campus, Admissions is busy preparing a robust virtual experience to help new families learn more about our curriculum and community. This year will be a little different. As we work to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our Red-Tails Hawks, our Admissions team, in addition to our students, parents, teachers, and other administrators, are working tirelessly to design virtual, informational events to help you get to know us better!
The 2019-20 school year was certainly an unprecedented one. A global pandemic disrupted BASIS Independent McLean’s final trimester and pushed the school to distance learning; however, from August to early March, students, staff, and families participated in a robust on-campus community.
Miller H. ’20 has been named an Extraordinary Teen by Arlington Magazine. The magazine cites that his love of game creation started as early as grade 1 with a modified game of Tag. Twelve years later, Miller is a published game designer.
Spring 2020 Student Accomplishments
Though we could not be on campus together this past spring trimester, our students continued to test their knowledge, help others, and earn recognition. Here we highlight our students’ accomplishments from spring 2020.
Everyone remembers that one teacher—the one that left such a strong impression that you actually started to call English your favorite class even when you’ve always been a “math person.” To paraphrase BASIS Independent Brooklyn French Subject Expert Teacher Mr. Mandeville, at BASIS Independent Schools, all teachers are that one teacher—each one forges a true connection between their students and the lessons being taught, instilling in them an avid love for their subject. Good luck asking one of our students what their favorite class is. They either tell you, “all of them!” or, “it changes each year!”
Our dedication to hiring world-class teachers is one of the reasons our network and students have seen such notable success over the years—from achieving top results on the OECD Test for Schools (based on PISA) and Advanced Placement exams, to our students gaining admission to some of the world’s best colleges, including Columbia, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and more. Our robust teacher recruiting process is designed to find and hire high-caliber educators who inspire students to gain the knowledge, confidence, and critical-thinking skills to accomplish whatever they set their minds to.
To help families better understand what goes into ensuring every teacher at school is their child’s favorite teacher, we want to provide you with a look inside our teacher selection and hiring process.
We asked our student bloggers to write about their distance learning experience. Today, Eric M. ’21 shares the impact distance learning has had on him.
Inspired by the blissful feeling of uncovering connections, our blog Eureka! McLean is about sharing moments that capture the essence of what it is to be a BASIS Independent student, teacher, administrator, or family.
