Student Voice: Benjamin '23 - The Benefits of Seminar Classes

This week, our student blogger, Benjamin W., talks about his experience with our high school seminar classes.

When you think of a classroom, what comes to mind? Many people imagine a class with students sitting in rows, watching a teacher at the front of the classroom leading the class. The students are sitting silently, and respectfully, occasionally raising hands to answer questions posed by the teacher, who may be lecturing.

That is exactly what a seminar class does not look like. Yes, you read that correctly. Seminar. Discussion-based classes usually only appear in college, but I’ve had the privilege of participating in a few history or English seminar classes in high school. The typical class revolves around a student-led discussion. Students do not raise hands to speak. They are trusted to speak at appropriate times: when they have a point to make and someone else has finished speaking.

Student Voice: Neel D. - The COVID-19 Affected NBA Season

This week, student blogger, Neel D., shares how the pandemic changed one of his favorite hobbies--watching NBA basketball.

Basketball fans remember on March 11, 2020, when the NBA made the decision to stop the game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder. Thousands of fans in the stadium were forced to leave as the players went back to their respective locker rooms. In one of the craziest days in NBA history, nobody was sure if the NBA would ever resume their season. NBA players were testing positive for coronavirus and shortly after, the whole country was placed on lockdown.

Student Voice: Sophie P. '22 - Creating Campaign Posters

This week, our student blogger, Sophie P., discusses her experience creating a campaign poster of her own!

The right to vote is one of the most important ways that an individual can impact their community directly, and this personal power has never been of more consequence than in the election this November.

In honor of this historic election, this trimester, high school art teacher Ms. Rowland assigned her classes a project in which each student would create their own campaign poster about a subject they are passionate about. Without any requirements on content, medium, or color, art students were able to use their creative abilities to send a public message on important issues facing our country, or another country today.

From the Admissions Director: The Benefits of Transitioning to BIM in Grade 5

Whether you are in the midst of a school search or just starting to consider a transition, changing schools is a life-altering decision for your child and for your family. Each year, we see a large number of families, coming from both private and public schools, questioning if they should apply in grade 5 versus waiting until grade 6. Seeing a recent increase in this question, I decided to dedicate a blog focused on the benefits of transitioning into the BASIS Curriculum in grade 5.

At BASIS Independent McLean (BIM), middle school begins in grade 5, and middle school can be an exciting time in a student’s academic journey. By surrounding your child with other students who are engaged and enthusiastic learners and placing them in classrooms led by dynamic and knowledge expert teachers, your child can work with an advanced curriculum and recognize their full potential.

From the Admissions Director: What Are You Doing the Next 15 Days?

As we replace our jack-o-lanterns with harvest pumpkins and prepare for the season of thanksgiving, I am thankful to be part of such a dynamic learning community. Here, at BASIS Independent McLean, I am surrounded by students, teachers, and administrators who inspire me each day.

As we shared our community with you – virtually - this year, I was able to spend even more time in classrooms – connecting and learning from our teacher and students. My hope is that their stories, their learning, and their fun have inspired your family to join us.

Eight Seniors Honored by National Merit Scholarship Program

Eight seniors in BASIS Independent McLean’s Class of 2021 have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 34,000 students are recognized as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT.
