Over 83% of BASIS Independent McLean high school students have earned an AP Scholar award, recognition from the College Board based on their performance on their 2019 AP exams. These awards recognize students who have demonstrated both a depth and breadth of knowledge through college-level mastery across multiple disciplines.

The College Board awards the following distinctions for AP exams, and we have students who have achieved all levels.

  • National AP Scholar: students who received a score of 4 or higher on at least 8 exams, and an average score of 4 or higher across all exams taken.
  • AP Scholar with Distinction: students who received a score of 3 or higher on at least 5 exams, and an average score of 3.5 across all exams taken.
  • AP Scholar with Honors: students who received a score of 3 or higher on 4 or more exams, and have an average score of at least 3.25 across all exams taken.
  • AP Scholar: students who received a score of 3 or higher on 3 or more AP exams.

Nationwide, only about 10% of students earn the distinction of AP Scholar or higher by the time they graduate. More impressive than the number of students to earn this award at BASIS Independent McLean is how quickly some students were able to earn distinction. We are thrilled to share some to the top accomplishments here:

  • The National AP Scholar award is typically the highest honor granted to a student before graduation, representing completion of almost a year’s worth of college credit already, and is granted to less than 1% of students nationwide. Last year, we had two students achieve this, and this year we have 26!  Fourteen students achieved it after junior year, which is twice times rarer than achieving National Merit Semifinalist status. To achieve this after sophomore year is eight times rarer than earning a perfect score on the ACT, and we have 10 Red-Tailed Hawks who have done this.
  • Students who achieve the AP Scholar with Distinction award have already completed at least a semester’s worth of college credit while still in high school. 100% of our Class of 2019 earned this honor.
  • In the Class of 2021, 100% of students have already received an AP Scholar award before starting their junior year. Additionally, 96% of our Class of 2022 has achieved this distinction. Compared to the national average for graduating seniors, our students are eight times more likely to receive an AP Scholar award.
  • In 2019, only seven freshman students in Virginia earned the AP Scholar with Honors and four attend BASIS Independent McLean—Dean B., Rodrigo G., Pallavi M., and Sophie P.

Congratulations to all our students who have earned an AP Scholar Award for their performance on their 2019 AP exam performance:

National AP Scholar: Students who have a score of 4 or higher on at least 8 exams, and an average score of 4 or higher across all exams taken.

AP Scholar with Distinction: Students who have a score of 3 or higher on at least 5 exams, and an average score of 3.5 across all exams taken. These students have already completed at least a semester’s worth of college credit while still in high school. Only about 4% of graduating seniors receive this award across the nation, however, 100% of our Class of 2020 has achieved it. Less than 1/10th of 1% of students receive it after sophomore year, and this year we have 11 students who have earned this distinction.
