The BASIS Independent McLean Science Olympiad team and two students on the MATHCOUNTS team are headed to their respective state championships!

At the Regional MATHCOUNTS competition on February 1, Aiden F. ’25 placed 2nd and Max Y. ’24 placed 3rd, which qualified both of them for the Virginia MATHCOUNTS State competition in March. The BASIS Independent McLean MATHCOUNTS team of Aiden, Max, Brian Z. ’24, and Neha R. ’24 placed second in the regional competition. 

Eight BIM students placed in the top 25%: Aiden F. ’25, Max Y. ’24, Brian Z. ’24, Aidan G. ’24, Neha R. ’24, Nicholas Z. ’24, Chetan B. ’24, and Andy Z. ’24.

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school math enrichment program that offers competition and club activities designed to foster appreciation of math among U.S. students to prepare students for future career opportunities and success.


On February 15, the BASIS Independent McLean Science Olympiad middle school team (Division B) rounded out the top 4 school its Regional tournament, and will be advancing to the State Competition in March. 


In the regional event, following event teams took top placements and medaled in their events:

- Boomiliver: Phoenix ’25 + Cameron ’25

- Circuit Lab: Caden ’25 + Oliver ’26

- Crime Buster: Ronica ’25 + Anaya ’25

- Crime Buster: Catie ’26 + Hera ’26

- Density Lab: Caden ’25 + Abhiram ’26

- Food Science: Matthew ’24 + Anika ’25

- Heredity: Chetan ’26+ Kaavya ’25

- Machines: Phoenix ’25 + Cameron ’25

- Mouse Trap Vehicle: Phoenix ’25 + Cameron ’25

James '26, Sanvi '26, Srikha '26, and Natasha '25 are also part of the team who helped earn the 4th place school finish. Sriya ’24 and Siddarth ’26 also contributed.
