As the first day of our inaugural school year approaches, we're thrilled to unveil to you the team that will make up the founding faculty & staff of BASIS Independent McLean. We're pleased to introduce to you Blaine Hartman, Subject Expert Teacher: Chemistry, at BASIS Independent McLean.

Blaine Hartman earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Chemistry from Florida State University in 2010. In 2015, she earned her Doctoral degree in Chemistry from Old Dominion University. Ms. Hartman’s dissertation was titled: Artificial maturation studies of polymethylenic plant biopolymers: Investigating the chemical alterations from plant material to coal.

Previously Ms. Hartman worked as a substitute teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools and as a high school Chemistry tutor. Ms. Hartman’s previous work experience includes working as a Teaching Assistant at Old Dominion University, where she taught a combination of General Chemistry I & II recitations and laboratories over eight semesters, totaling 22 courses. Ms. Hartman also participated in several mentorship programs while at Old Dominion University, educating female STEM high school students in biofuel research and essential research skills.

While reviewing the BASIS Independent McLean website for her application, Ms. Hartman’s main thought was, “I wish I could go to school here!” She was immediately drawn to the high academic expectations of the students, the focus on STEM courses, and the flexibility given to the educators that allows them to use their own approach to teaching the material.

“I am excited to be a part of the BASIS Independent McLean team and, as an educator, my goal is to not only instill the concepts and theories of the course, but to pass on the skills of the field and impart a sense of appreciation and curiosity for the material,” shares Ms. Hartman.

Ms. Hartman loves to travel and see new places; this is probably due to growing up in an Air Force family which resulted in living in seven states across the United States of America! While Ms. Hartman has been to almost every state in the USA, her favorite spot is Cocoa Beach, FL and she vacations there with her family every year.
