For the third year in a row, BASIS Independent McLean’s MATHCOUNTS team won the Northern Virginia Region Chapter Competition on Feb. 2. The team of Brian L. ’23, Sam W. ’23, Max Y. ’24, and Ethan Z. ’23 will compete in the state championships on March 16. The BASIS Independent McLean team is the two-time defending state champion. Both Sam and Ethan were on the winning team last year too.
“This year, the chapter competition results are a testament to the BASIS Independent McLean students' desire to succeed. As in any year I coach, I'm humbled for the opportunity to work with dynamic and talented kids and embrace the challenge to engage, energize, and motivate them. As always, I thank BIM for the opportunity to impact and enrich student's math education,” says coach Tyler Sullivan.
In total, 10 BIM students participated in the competition. Individually, Ethan, Sam, Max, Brian, Alan H. ’23, Brian L. ’23 , Alexander O. ’24, and Raymond Z. ’23 , placed in the top 25% of competitors.Neha R. ’24 and Eric F. ’23 also competed. All the students have been practicing for months to prepare for the competition. BIM parent Katie Kaufman is the team's assistant coach.
MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school math enrichment program offering competition and club activities designed to foster appreciation of math among U.S. students so as to prepare students for future career opportunities and success.
