BASIS Independent McLean students in grades one through five and their families, celebrated Chinese New Year this week. Our founding community came together to recognize the Year of the Rooster with songs, dances, food and more. Below are photos capturing the fun events! And, one of our students won the Red Envelope award in the DC Metro Red Envelope competition. We wish everyone a joyful 2017!

BASIS Independent Student Wins Art Competition

Congratulations to fifth-grader Chelsea H. who won the Red Envelope award in the DC Metro Red Envelope competition with her drawing of the 2017 Chinese New Year Rooster. The drawings chosen will be used on red envelopes, which in the Chinese tradition, are used as money holders symbolizing blessings and good fortune. Chelsea entered this art competition to show respect to her heritage and was ecstatic to learn her drawing was selected. Our art teacher and Lower School Dean Colleen Crable, assisted Chelsea in completing this award-winning drawing. Her winning entry is below.
