Driven by the diverse interests of our students, BASIS Independent McLean offered over 50 extracurricular clubs, sports, and activities in its founding year!

Red-Tailed Hawks not only work hard, but also play hard. Nearly 80% of our students, from preschool through grade 11, chose to participate in at least one auxiliary program. More than half of all students participated in at least two enrichment activities. Year-round clubs included Math Clubs (for middle and upper school), Yoga, Lego Club, Quiz Bowl, and Classics Club.

Our after school music program, led by our own Mr. Junsay, offered individualized instruction for percussion, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, and strings. Music students of all experience levels showcased their efforts to their parents and peers at the Spring Concert. From "Hot Cross Buns" for our beginners, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and the "Star Wars" main theme for our advanced musicians.

Our club students completed impressive projects like those of the App Builders Club led by our Technology Coordinator, Mr. Caravalho. Student toiled for weeks writing their own code, learned the technology used by actual app developers, and turned their app ideas into reality. You can download their apps free of charge, from the Google Play store. Preschoolers learned dance fundamentals and choreography for traditional ballet performances such as Swan Lake in Pre-Ballet. This program culminated in a recital (with tutus!) for their families in the theatre.

Clubs such as Model U.N., CyberPatriots, and Certamen (competitive Latin) gave our students the opportunity to compete against top performing schools in the area. Some of the highlights include our 11th grade Latin students placing first in the Virginia Senior Classical League’s 2016 Kickoff Certamen and our middle schoolers advancing to the semi-finals in their division of the CyberPatriot IX competition. Model U.N. students in high school attended one of the largest conferences in the country at Johns Hopkins University, with over 100 schools represented by 2,000 delegates.

With overwhelming student participation in the fall Basketball open gym, our students were able to form teams for Elementary Boys, Middle School Girls and Boys, and Varsity Boys teams for the winter season. Dr. Isquith, our own Spanish teacher, led the Middle School girls to win the Independent Small School Athletic Conference championship in their very first season!

Interested in something we haven’t offered? At BASIS Independent McLean, auxiliary programs are truly shaped by the passions of our students. Looking at the year ahead, we hope to foster the development of the following programs: Lego League Junior, FIRST Robotics Team, Middle School Girls and Boys Soccer, and after school language immersion.

Any forthcoming clubs and activities will depend on strong student participation. Examples of some of the unique clubs initiated by student interest include the Harry Potter Club, App Builders Club, Art of Anime, and Cryptocurrency Club!

We are looking forward to another exciting school year!
