Last weekend was a successful weekend for BASIS Independent McLean academic teams! Both the Model United Nations and Quiz Bowl teams competed with successful outcomes.

Model United Nations

Our middle and high school Model United Nations (MUN) teams participated in McLean High School’s Model United Nations Conference. Fifteen BASIS Independent McLean students acted as UN delegates and the following seven earned honors at the end of the conference.

Middle School General Assembly – Double Delegation:
Anika R. ’23 & Cameron C. ’25 – Outstanding Delegates as SOCHUM – Australia

Middle School Crisis Simulation - Single Delegations:
Melis O. ’24 – Best Delegate as West Wing – Thomas White: Secretary of the Army
Cavan G. ’23 – Honorable Delegate as West Wing – Donald Rumsfeld: Secretary of Defense

High School General Assembly – Double Delegation:
Wesley W. ’22 & Avi S. ’20 – Verbal Accommodation as UNPF – Saudi Arabia

High School Crisis Simulation – Single Delegation:
Kareem B. ’19 – Outstanding Delegate as JCC: NSA – Earnest Green: Chief of Staff of the NSA

Quiz Bowl

Two Quiz Bowl teams competed for BASIS Independent McLean in the Virginia Tech Fall Kick-Off II Tournament. They competed against 30 other high school teams.  

After a morning and afternoon of 11 rounds of competition, both the A and B team finished strong. The A team placed fourth in the overall tournament after grueling and close matches including a finals playoff round. The A team finished eight wins and three losses. The A team included Sam K. ’22, Justin W. ’21, Anna Y. ’21, and Jiaming Z.’21. The B team faced top level competition and took 11th place. The B team included Peter L. ’21, Charles T. ’20, Mimi Y. ’21, and Andy Z. ’21.

Individually, Justin was the number five top scorer overall, and Charles was the number 15 top scorer.
