BASIS Independent Schools: How Data Informs Network Excellence

BASIS Independent Schools are characterized by creativity and spirit, and they are driven by best practices from the top educational systems in the world. As our private schools branch out across the U.S. and the world, one secret to maintaining excellence network-wide rests in our central Curriculum Team. These professionals work tirelessly to assess data across schools with a shared goal - to improve student outcomes deliberately, quickly, and meaningfully.

Currently BASIS Independent Schools educate students in Brooklyn, NY; Fremont, CA; McLean, VA; Manhattan, NY; and Silicon Valley, CA. A new campus will open this fall in Bellevue, WA. Our world-acclaimed curriculum taught by Subject Expert Teachers draws families to the schools; however, a key strength that is not as well understood rests in our private school network’s ability and commitment to using data to improve continually, rather than rest on our reputation for excellence, particularly given our rapidly evolving world.

“It is critical that we have a continuity of excellence at BASIS Independent Schools,” said Toby Walker, Vice President of BASIS Independent Schools. “That we hold ourselves to high standards, and that we learn from each other as school leaders and teachers across our network. The data around academic outcomes inform this approach; the collaboration among our teachers and administrators is based in large part on taking advantage of the insights our data provides. We take seriously our responsibility to act on these insights to improve our students’ experience.”

BASIS Independent Schools: A Growing Network

Nearly every week our school leaders field requests from families across the country to build a school near them. Families place a high value on giving their children an innovative, well-rounded education—one that supports accelerated learning, independent thinking, creativity, and critical inquiry from the very first day. The first BASIS Independent Schools opened their doors in Brooklyn and Silicon Valley during the fall of 2014. Now our private school program is well established as offering the highest international level of learning after graduating classes of seniors in California as well as New York City and Washington D.C. metro campuses.

Today we want to share and celebrate network growth from coast to coast:

“It is critical that we have a continuity of excellence at BASIS Independent Schools,” said Toby Walker, Vice President of BASIS Independent Schools. “That we hold ourselves to high standards, and that we learn from each other as school leaders and teachers across our network. The demand for our program is humbling, and we are committed to making it available to students and families.

Leadership Spotlight: Monica Masterson - Director of Auxiliary Programs

Monica MastersonDirector of Auxiliary Programs, Ms. Monica Masterson, joins BASIS Independent Manhattan from our Brooklyn campus and will oversee all after-school enrichment programs, school social events, athletic competitions and external academic competitions. Ms. Masterson is excited to foster friendships among our students by providing bonding opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

We know there is great interest in finding out what extracurriculars will be available this school year, so we asked Ms. Masterson specific questions about her role and what families can expect when it comes to auxiliary programs.

How will your experience at the Brooklyn campus help support the programs being created on the Upper West Side?

As the former Director of Auxiliary Programs at BASIS Independent Brooklyn, I intend to bring quality programs and reliable vendors to Manhattan. During my two years at Brooklyn I fostered many relationships with vendors and learned the student interests of different grade-bands. While I know the interests of Manhattan students may show variations, I would not be surprised if there are similarities. I’m ready to anticipate the needs of Manhattan families and mold to their interests.

Earlier this year, Mr. Berman's family grew with the birth of his baby daughter Demi, who turns one in September. The Bermans reside on the Upper East Side, which prompted the transfer to Manhattan.

Mr. Berman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development from Binghamton University, Master of Arts in Elementary Education from St. Johns University, and Certification in Child Developmental Psychology from Queens College.

Leadership Spotlight: Michael Scionti - Director of Academic Programs

BASIS Independent Manhattan's newly appointed Director of Academic Programs Mike Scionti will join us from our sister charter school BASIS Oro Valley (K - Gr. 12). Mike, his MikeScionti_image.jpgwife, and two children are relocating from Arizona this summer, and he is thrilled to join our BASIS Independent Manhattan team.

Mr. Scionti leaves BASIS Oro Valley on a high note with the recent release of U.S. News & World Report high school rankings placing the school as the third best public high school in the country (among the 22,000 public high schools ranked in all 50 states and the District of Columbia). The high schools ranked #1 and #2 were also BASIS Curriculum Schools.

We sat down with Mr. Scionti to ask some simple, yet important, questions to help familiarize you with the newest member of the BIM leadership team.

Can you explain a bit about your role as Director of Academic Programs? Many families might not know exactly what that entails.

My role has many different elements but achieving great results with students is always at the forefront. The Director of Academic Programs reviews data constantly and works with teachers to customize plans of instruction - either for the class or for individuals - to deliver the highest quality teaching possible. I will also be looking after the various internal and external assessments that measure our students' learning and serving as a communication link between the school and families at home.
