As the first day of our inaugural school year approaches, we're thrilled to unveil to you the team that will make up the founding faculty and staff of BASIS Independent Manhattan. We're pleased to introduce to you Liz Kahn, Subject Expert Teacher: Engineering
Ms. Kahn graduated summa cum laude from Temple University’s Honors Psychology program. Her studies were focused on neuroscience and fMRI imaging. While studying at Temple, she received the Diamond Scholar Award and the Psychology Prize Baccalaureate Award, both for academic excellence and research contributions. After taking a year off from academia to work in fundraising and development at her favorite nonprofit, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, she returned for a Master’s degree in Elementary Education at the University of Pennsylvania, from which she graduated with honors.
As the Subject Expert Teacher in Engineering for BASIS Independent Manhattan, Ms. Kahn’s goal is to give students the tools they need to explore and understand the world around them. She strives to spark student interest and creativity while teaching the principles of design thinking, persistence, and cognitive flexibility.
She initially chose BASIS Independent Manhattan because of the program’s high expectations for students and positive outlook on the capacity of young learners. Ms. Kahn says she is happy to be in a place where expert teachers teach the subjects they love to students who, in turn, have role models that are smart, accomplished, and inspired adults who are eager to keep learning.
In her spare time, Ms. Kahn is an avid reader and can think of no better afternoon than wandering around a new place and trying different foods with a good book in hand -- even better if it’s in a foreign city, as she loves to travel! Her favorite destinations include Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, and Kyoto. She also loves animals and can be found volunteering at shelters, taking care of foster kittens, or spending hours in dog parks with her Akita, Oki.
