As the first day of our inaugural school year approaches, we're thrilled to unveil to you the team that will make up the founding faculty and staff of BASIS Independent Manhattan. We're pleased to introduce to you Jane Marie Hutcheson, Subject Expert Teacher: Humanities.

Hailing from Alabama, Ms. Hutcheson graduated from Samford University summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Latin American Studies in 2013. She then moved to Washington, D.C. to begin her teaching career.

After teaching both kindergarten and pre-kindergarten in Southeast D.C., Ms. Hutcheson moved to New York City in 2015 to pursue a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College at Columbia University. While at Teachers College, she taught in a 1st grade inclusive co-teaching class at a charter school in East Harlem, where she was able to focus her Master’s Action Research Project on building positive classroom communities. After receiving her Master’s degree in May of 2017, she decided to continue her education and research at Teachers College, enrolling in a Master of Education program in Curriculum and Teaching.Jane Marie Hutcheson.jpg

Ms. Hutcheson is the Humanities Subject Expert Teacher for 1st - 3rd grades, responsible for teaching reading, writing, phonics, grammar, and social studies to each grade level.

“I chose BASIS Independent knowing I would be surrounded by talented and creative staff where we are able to do what we do best everyday: use our creativity, subject and teaching expertise to develop students academically, socially and emotionally,” says Ms. Hutcheson.

“When I’m not in the classroom, you can find me running in Riverside Park, playing tennis, or visiting a new art exhibit,” she says. “In the summertime, I use my time off of school to travel and foster dogs through local shelters.”
