Teacher Q&A

In this series, we sit down with our teachers and ask them about their experiences teaching at BASIS Independent Fremont, what motivates them, and some other fun questions. Today we talk with Ms. Heather Burley, our Performing Arts Subject Expert Teacher.

What do you enjoy the most about teaching at BASIS Independent Fremont?

It is so rewarding to be a part of this amazing school community! I am very grateful to work with such talented students, staff, and teachers!

What do you hope students take away from your classes?

I hope that students will gain confidence in effectively communicating with others. Whether students are communicating in a group setting or presenting a play on the stage, I aim for students to feel confident sharing their creative ideas with others. My goal is for students to learn valuable communication skills that will benefit their social as well as academic growth.

Can you think of a memorable anecdote from teaching at BASIS Independent Fremont?

My most memorable moment at BASIS Independent Fremont is when one of my shy students suddenly spoke with a very loud and confident voice on the stage. It put a smile on my face to see this student overcome stage fright.

What do you enjoy doing outside of teaching?

I enjoy traveling, hiking, yoga, and theatre.

Can you share some of your accomplishments or awards?

During my time in California, I have overcome my fear of heights and climbed to the top of Lassen Peak and Sierra Buttes!

What motivated you to become a teacher?

Many of my family members were teachers. I remember when I was growing up how excited I’d get when my mom asked me to help decorate her classroom for the upcoming school year. I knew ever since I was a young child that I wanted to work in the field of education.
