Summer Program Spotlight on Astronomy
This week our spotlight series is on one of our science programs, Astronomy, which was developed and is taught by BASIS Independent Brooklyn all-star Mr. Joshua Winter. Astronomy is a full-day program that will give students entering Grades 5-8 the opportunity to learn about the foundation of our planet and the solar system through interactive classroom instruction and exciting field trips.
The program will be held during the first week of BASIS Independent Summer on our Brooklyn campus July 10-14.
We took the opportunity to talk to Mr. Winter to learn more about the programs and hear why he is excited to be part of the summer program.

BASIS Independent Brooklyn all-star teacher Mr. Steve D’Amato is thrilled to be leading two popular summer programs: English and Minecraft. I recently sat down with Mr. D’Amato to learn more about his vision for these two programs and why he decided to spend his summer at BASIS Independent Brooklyn.Matthew Beller: Can you tell the BASIS Independent community why you chose to spend your summer with us?
Steve D’Amato: I decided to teach the summer program here at BASIS Independent Brooklyn because I want to give students the opportunity to brush up on their English, writing, and reading skills. Additionally, as the senior moderator of the most populous club at school, I felt that offering a Minecraft Club section was not only necessary, but also essential to ensuring some good ‘ol summertime gaming fun.
Summer Program Spotlight on Science Exploration and Astronomy
This week our spotlight series is on two of our science programs, Science Exploration and Astronomy, which are created and taught by BASIS Independent Brooklyn all-stars Dr. Angela Hahn and Mr. Joshua Winter respectively. Science Exploration is a half-day all hands on laboratory program in which students will conduct a variety of science experiments in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Astronomy is a full day program that will give students the opportunity to learn about the foundation of our planet and the solar system through classroom instruction, field trips and a nighttime viewing of the stars on the last day of the program.
I recently sat down with Dr. Hahn and Mr. Winter to learn more about their programs and hear why they are excited to be part of the inaugural BASIS Independent Summer Program in Brooklyn.
