BASIS Independent Schools: How Data Informs Network Excellence

BASIS Independent Schools are characterized by creativity and spirit, and they are driven by best practices from the top educational systems in the world. As our private schools branch out across the U.S. and the world, one secret to maintaining excellence network-wide rests in our central Curriculum Team. These professionals work tirelessly to assess data across schools with a shared goal - to improve student outcomes deliberately, quickly, and meaningfully.

Currently BASIS Independent Schools educate students in Brooklyn, NY; Fremont, CA; McLean, VA; Manhattan, NY; and Silicon Valley, CA. A new campus will open this fall in Bellevue, WA. Our world-acclaimed curriculum taught by subject expert teachers draws families to the schools; however, a key strength that is not as well understood rests in our private school network’s ability and commitment to using data to improve continually, rather than rest on our reputation for excellence, particularly given our rapidly evolving world.

“It is critical that we have a continuity of excellence at BASIS Independent Schools,” said Toby Walker, Vice President of BASIS Independent Schools. “That we hold ourselves to high standards, and that we learn from each other as school leaders and teachers across our network. The data around academic outcomes inform this approach; the collaboration among our teachers and administrators is based in large part on taking advantage of the insights our data provides. We take seriously our responsibility to act on these insights to improve our students’ experience.”

Introducing Our National Junior Honor Society!

Founded in 1929, the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is an internationally renowned student organizationNHJS committed to upholding the five pillars of scholarship, character, citizenship, service, and leadership within secondary schools. NJHS chapters can be found in all 50 states, and it is estimated that approximately one million students participate in chapters throughout the world. Members of this organization engage in local and school based community service projects, and meet regularly with the support of chapter advisers.

This year, 7th and 8th grade students at BASIS Independent Brooklyn became eligible to participate in our school’s very first NJHS chapter. Our school already has an established National Honor Society, and our chapter advisory board was thrilled to present this opportunity to some of our younger students. Our faculty council selected students to apply based on past academic and extracurricular achievement (students must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.5), and exemplary behavior. Once selected, students were required to write an essay outlining their interest in the organization, and their commitment to serving their school and local community.

BASIS Independent Brooklyn Student Competing on MasterChef Junior!

It is no secret that our students are multifaceted. BASIS.ed students are Model U.N. winners, history bee competitors, inventors, entrepreneurs, Olympic Trial swimmers, chess champions, community activists, movie directors, and mathletes.

A typical BASIS.ed student, fourth Grader Donovan M. has always been many things - a thoughtful friend, focused Donovan_Milstein_mc-s5_02-group02_0328_hires1 (002)-1.jpgstudent, and very talented chef. His friends, family and teachers have always known about Donovan's incredible love of cooking. Now the whole country will get the chance to see Donovan flex his culinary muscles as as he competes in MasterChef Junior Season 5 (FOX) starting Thursday, February 9, 2017.

We took a moment to ask Donovan and his dad Scott about the experience and Donovan's love of cooking.

BASIS Organizational Skills for Success (B.O.S.S.) Program

When students join a new school or return to school from their summer vacations, it can be an uneasy experience with all the changes year-to-year. Different teachers, different classes, different classmates can all contribute to lowering a student's confidence in the new school year. For this reason, BASIS Independent Brooklyn - like all BASIS.ed schools - conducts an annual program to help students ease their transition into the new school year that we call BASIS Organizational Skills for Success, or, simply, B.O.S.S.

These achievements are a manifestation of that spirit."

Below scratches the surface of what has been a school year of accomplishments for our sister school community. We look forward to watching this list grow in the years to come:

A Limitless Future: The BASIS Independent Student Video

We are excited to unveil to you the fruits of a couple of non-stop days in October - our BASIS Independent videos! Over the course of December and early January, we shared with you the first two videos in the series, the BASIS Independent Parent Video and the BASIS Independent Faculty Video.

Here's a refresher on the project: Over the course of three days, we filmed three separate videos: one about the family experience with our school, the teacher perspective on what it's like to work here, and the student perspective on what it is like to learn here. We love these videos and hope you do, too.

They are raw, spur of the moment, unscripted reflections of what it's like to be a part of the BASIS Independent community.

They breathe life into Education Redefined and demonstrate what happens when you combine an accelerated, rigorous curriculum with exceptional, expert educators in an environment of support and deep respect for the art and science of learning.
