BASIS Independent Brooklyn Student Competing on MasterChef Junior!

It is no secret that our students are multifaceted. BASIS.ed students are Model U.N. winners, history bee competitors, inventors, entrepreneurs, Olympic Trial swimmers, chess champions, community activists, movie directors, and mathletes.

A typical BASIS.ed student, fourth Grader Donovan M. has always been many things - a thoughtful friend, focused Donovan_Milstein_mc-s5_02-group02_0328_hires1 (002)-1.jpgstudent, and very talented chef. His friends, family and teachers have always known about Donovan's incredible love of cooking. Now the whole country will get the chance to see Donovan flex his culinary muscles as as he competes in MasterChef Junior Season 5 (FOX) starting Thursday, February 9, 2017.

We took a moment to ask Donovan and his dad Scott about the experience and Donovan's love of cooking.

A Limitless Future: The BASIS Independent Student Video

We are excited to unveil to you the fruits of a couple of non-stop days in October - our BASIS Independent videos! Over the course of December and early January, we shared with you the first two videos in the series, the BASIS Independent Parent Video and the BASIS Independent Faculty Video.

Here's a refresher on the project: Over the course of three days, we filmed three separate videos: one about the family experience with our school, the teacher perspective on what it's like to work here, and the student perspective on what it is like to learn here. We love these videos and hope you do, too.

They are raw, spur of the moment, unscripted reflections of what it's like to be a part of the BASIS Independent community.

They breathe life into Education Redefined and demonstrate what happens when you combine an accelerated, rigorous curriculum with exceptional, expert educators in an environment of support and deep respect for the art and science of learning.

"It literally electrocuted the crowd": Back to School Reflections with Mr. Griffin

As we dive headfirst into fall, Back to School Reflections is a series designed to 'catch up' with members of our faculty and administration on how the ease into the school year is going.

A growing and thriving student population brings a number of exciting additions to our expert faculty. In the wake of our Meet the Teacher evening where parents and teachers met to get to know each other and discuss student expectations and plans for the year, Mr. Cunningham sat with Mr. Sean Griffin, a first year teacher to talk about "electric" excitement over poetry and how both him and his students are adjusting back to the start of school.

What did you do over spring break?

Here’s to wrapping up the first week back after a well-deserved break. For some, this years’ Spring Break was filled by spending quality time at home with family. For others it was an opportunity for an adventure in far-off lands.

Photographer Troy House reflects on capturing BASIS Independent Brooklyn in action

A few weeks ago, we had photographer Troy House come in to take pictures of our students in our current school location (15 Snyder Ave) as well as photo-document the progress of our permanent school house, the 100,000 square foot new construction at 556 Columbia in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We sat down to talk to Troy about his experience, which he shares with us below.
