High School Scholarship Program: The Details! (Part 1)

We were so excited by the response we saw when we announced our High School Merit Scholarship program. It is wonderful to speak with students interested in "throwing their hat in the ring" and are finally ready to release the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and HOW of this opportunity:

WHO is eligible? Students currently enrolled at BASIS Independent Brooklyn in grades 8 and 9 as well as students who are applying or have applied to BASIS Independent Brooklyn for grades 9 and 10 for the fall 2016 school year.

WHAT is required for consideration? A select number of Merit Scholarships will be awarded to students based on their performance on our Merit Scholarship Exam and demonstrated financial need, plus an optional personal contribution. A personal contribution is anything that allows us to get to know you, and it is entirely up to you what you share with us. It could be a portfolio, a video, a piece of writing, a project you are really proud of, a picture of your collection of medals from your swim team - think outside the box!

BASIS Independent Brooklyn at the Brown University Club

BrownClubWithout a doubt, the most rewarding part of being on the ground floor of starting a new educational community in Brooklyn is seeing students excel, of hearing time and time again, “I love my school.”

A close second is the recognition we have achieved as an institution in the prestigious educational landscape of New York City. In a few short months, in a temporary facility, BASIS Independent Brooklyn has become a school to watch.

We’re also making our mark as a program that the educational community is looking to for insights, to have us share how we do what we do, and why we do it.

Join our Enrollment Team Saturday, March 7th at 10:30 AM as we participate on a special panel hosted by the Brown University Club in New York on all things High School Admissions in New York City. As we grow our High School program beginning in the Fall 2015-2016 school year, we’ve been asked to weigh in on the high school landscape, the search process, and how to determine the right fit for students.

For more information on tickets, location, and panelist bios, see here.

Independent Study Redefined: The BASIS Independent Senior Research Project (Part 2 of 3)

In anticipation of a special lecture on the BASIS Independent College Counseling and Senior Research Project Programs, this new three-part series offers a closer look at one of the hallmarks of a BASIS Independent education: The Senior Research Project.

In Part 1 of the series, we took a look at the purpose of the Senior Research Project. We discussed how they work and why they’re a valuable experience for BASIS Independent Seniors. Part 2 is all about the projects themselves.

Part 2: What are some examples of the Senior Research Project (SRP)?

Senior Research Projects are all about exploring passions.

As long as the topic they choose is educational, the seniors have free reign to design a project of their choosing. For some students, the Senior Research Project solidifies what it is they would like to further pursue in their academic and professional endeavors, and for others, it is simply an opportunity to dig deeper on a topic that piqued their interest in class.

Project Highlights

Topics students choose range from studying robotic surgery for bladder cancer treatment to studying the process of learning to play a musical instrument and everywhere in between. Here are some select projects from the Class(es) of 2015:
