Unlike the traditional self-contained classroom led by one teacher, or one teacher and an aide, BASIS Independent Brooklyn students in grades 1–4 benefit from the expertise of multiple full-time teachers, including our Learning Expert Teachers (LET), who guide students as they move between classrooms throughout the day. Students thus have two full-time, qualified teachers in each class, resulting in a unique, pedagogically-robust classroom environment.
BASIS Independent Brooklyn's high school is growing under the leadership of Head of School Ms. Hadley Ruggles, her executive team, and our passionate, entusiastic faculty. Ms. Ruggles previously led BASIS Scottsdale, which U.S. News & World Report recently ranked as the #1 public high school in the nation, and she brings a wealth of experience to the Brooklyn campus.
"Through smaller high school classes, you have more opportunities - to participate in class, craft your own club and be a leader," said Ms. Ruggles at a recent talk on the difference offered by BASIS Independent Brooklyn's high school. "You also have the opportunity to be known. Our teachers really get to know your interests; they know your likes. They help partner you with programs and options to help you carve out your own path. Our students never get lost in the crowd."
We have fielded many questions about the student experience offered as we build out our private high school in Red Hook. Who better to help convey that than one of our great 10th grade students?
Eva Y. offered to share a typical day for her at our school in her own words. She and her younger sister came to BASIS Independent Brooklyn after transfering from another private school in Manhattan. Eva and her classmates will comprise our first graduating class in 2019.
Inspired by the blissful feeling of uncovering connections, our blog Eureka! Brooklyn is about sharing moments that capture the essence of what it is to be a BASIS Independent student, teacher, administrator, or family.
