Our new Associate Director of Admissions Ms. Knapp wants to help prospective families learn more about what it's like to attend BASIS Independent McLean! In the third part of her blog series, Ms. Knapp sat down with some of our middle school students in grades 5–7 to learn about their transition to our our school.
We’re excited to highlight our first middle school camp in our Summer Spotlight series—Jumpstart! This camp is perfect for new and returning students in grades 6–8 to acquire a strong foundation for a successful BASIS Independent McLean middle school experience.
We are proud to induct 37 students into our newly minted chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), with 10 NHS members and 27 NJHS members. Students must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA or 90% cumulative average and be in grades 10–12 for NHS and grades 6–9 for NJHS to apply for membership.
Way to go Team SWEEP! Our MATHCOUNTS team earned first place in the state championships in Richmond this past weekend. This year’s team, dubbed Team SWEEP as a combination of their initials, included: Sam W. ’23, Eleanor K. ’22, Ethan Z. ’23, and Pravalika P. ’22.
This marks the BASIS Independent McLean MATHCOUNTS team’s second time participating and second time winning in the annual statewide MATHCOUNTS competition. Both Pravalika and Ethan were on last year’s winning team as well.
Middle and high school Art Subject Expert Teacher Ms. Rowland sees unlimited possibilities in art for her students, no matter their level of artistic skill. One of her favorite tactics is to remove all erasers from the classroom so students have to think outside their box and see an accidental line as more than a mistake. In Ms. Rowland’s class, students learn that art teaches problem solving, finding a new perspective, and resilience, all while discovering more about themselves.
Can you believe that the school year is more than halfway over? Time has flown! We know many of you are excited to begin preparing for your summer vacations and other seasonal plans, but we wanted to remind you that now is also the time for middle and high school students to consider the classes they want to take in the upcoming 2018–19 school year.
For the second year in a row, the BASIS Independent McLean MATHCOUNTS team won the Northern Virginia Region Chapter Competition, which took place on February 3. The team, Eleanor K. '22, Pravalika P. '22, Sam W. '23, and Ethan Z. '23, will compete in the state championships on March 17. The BASIS Independent McLean team is the defending state champion.
What better way to learn about our school than from a current student! Mackenzie F. ’24 is a first-year BASIS Independent McLean student, who likes physics, the friends she’s made at school, and her teachers. She has enjoyed school so much that only two months in she applied and was accepted as an admissions student ambassador. She says it was the Student Visitor Program that cemented her decision to attend BASIS Independent McLean, and she can’t wait to share that same experience with other prospective students.
Ten BASIS Independent McLean students took top honors at the American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8) 2017. What an accomplishment!
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Through classroom resources and friendly competition, this event helps educators from around the country identify talent and foster a love of mathematics.
We are thrilled that our students not only took on such a challenge, but that they emerged so victorious.
Learn more about BASIS Independent McLean from a current student! Searra ’23 is an admissions student ambassador who enjoys taking three sciences in middle school, playing on the conference-winning basketball team, and finds herself interested in English class for the first time. As a student ambassador, Searra and other students attend admissions events to talk to prospective families, and host students for a day through our Student Visitor Program
Inspired by the blissful feeling of uncovering connections, our blog Eureka! McLean is about sharing moments that capture the essence of what it is to be a BASIS Independent student, teacher, administrator, or family.
