Way to go Team SWEEP! Our MATHCOUNTS team earned first place in the state championships in Richmond this past weekend. This year’s team, dubbed Team SWEEP as a combination of their initials, included: Sam W. ’23, Eleanor K. ’22, Ethan Z. ’23, and Pravalika P. ’22.
This marks the BASIS Independent McLean MATHCOUNTS team’s second time participating and second time winning in the annual statewide MATHCOUNTS competition. Both Pravalika and Ethan were on last year’s winning team as well.
Congratulations to Josh F., Pravi P., Ethan Z., and Austin Z., BASIS Independent McLean's fabulous Mathcounts team and coaches Rikki McCullough and Tyler Sullivan for winning the Mathcounts State Championships!
All four team members placed in the top 20 spots in the individual competition. Pravi took first place, Ethan took second, Josh placed 10th, and Austin placed 19th!
The National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers and Mathematics and CN Foundation created Mathcounts in 1983. These groups founded this national middle school enrichment program to promote the importance and value of math in school and beyond. The program was brought to life through competitions and club activities.
"The win was very exciting as a new teacher and coach. It shows that our new school has some talented kids and teachers willing to help them push to be the best," said Coach McCullough. "The team worked very well as a team as well as individually. They put in a lot of hours on practicing for this."
What a year it has been at our sister school, BASIS Independent Silicon Valley! As they settle into their summer routine, we reflect fondly on their student achievements for the year.
BISV Head of School, Mr. Walker, says, "As a school community we are so much more than simply our outstanding test scores. We are a thriving learning community made of dynamic and determined students who embody the spirit of curiosity and academic intrigue. These achievements are a manifestation of that spirit."
Below scratches the surface of what has been a school year of accomplishments for our sister school community. We look forward to watching this list grow in the years to come:
BASIS Independent Schools students and teachers know no limit when it comes to accomplishments. We're incredibly proud of the following story from our Silicon Valley campus that beautifully illustrates something we strive towards as a school: strong, true partnertship between teachers and students:
We have had no shortage of student achievement this year at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley. We beam with Bobcat pride each time we learn about the wide variety of our students' accomplishments both in and out of the classroom, in academic competitions as well as in sports and dance.
When Jaydev B. in grade 8 (Jay for short) was named as a finalist in the 2015 Broadcom MASTERS competition this fall for his project "Sweet Drought: Effects of Dry Farming on Sugar Concentrations in Pisum sativum," we realized that this is not only an incredible recognition of Jay as a student, but a wonderful illustration of some of our most fundamental goals as a school: student and teacher collaboration and the pursuit of excellence.
Inspired by the blissful feeling of uncovering connections, our blog Eureka! McLean is about sharing moments that capture the essence of what it is to be a BASIS Independent student, teacher, administrator, or family.
