For the second year in a row, the BASIS Independent McLean MATHCOUNTS team won the Northern Virginia Region Chapter Competition, which took place on February 3. The team, Eleanor K. '22, Pravalika P. '22, Sam W. '23, and Ethan Z. '23, will compete in the state championships on March 17. The BASIS Independent McLean team is the defending state champion.

I am extremely proud of the success of Team SWEEP (Sam W., Ethan, Eleanor, and Pravi) and their win at chapters. I'm thankful to the parents and BASIS Independent McLean for the opportunity to coach these talented individuals," says coach Tyler Sullivan. "This has been a very challenging and rewarding job, embracing and appreciating the abundant talents of the team. I hope our journey continues to nationals and many other victories.” 

Individually, Pravalika placed first, Sam third, Ethan fifth, and Eleanor sixth. Six additional team members competed individually: Sam K. '22, Brian L. '23, Alexander O. '24, Max Y. '24, Raymond Z. '23, and Brian Z. '24. All the students have been practicing for months to prepare for the competition.

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school math enrichment program offering competition and club activities designed to foster appreciation of math among U.S. students to prepare students for future career opportunities and success.
