On Teens & Taking Risks

There's a reason adolescence is often referred to as the tumultuous teenage years. Whether you and your teen are in the thick of these years or you are what feels like light years away, it is important for parents and educators alike to understand why teens take risks and how to protect them.

As part of their on-campus thought series, BASIS Independent Brooklyn invited acclaimed adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Jess Shatkin to discuss the findings in his debut novel, the culmination of years of research and study, Born to Be Wild - Why Teens Take Risks and How We Can Keep Them Safe, which was just featured in the Washington Post.

We thought we would share some of the incredible learnings from this book with you.

The SET/LET Relationship (Explained!)

Imagine that you are back at school sitting in a class you excel in. You might be a little bored because you already read ahead in the textbook, and you zone out when the teacher talks. You know this already! Or maybe you’re in a class you don’t like very much because you struggle with the material. Why is the teacher going so fast? You barely understood the last lesson! Now imagine there was a second teacher in that classroom, one who knew your strengths and areas for improvement, who could work with you to make sure you were achieving your potential in the best way for you. That second teacher in the class helping students while the first teacher leads the class creates the SET/LET relationship at BASIS Independent Fremont.

We've enjoyed meeting all of the families who have joined us at an Information Session or an Open House. Many of the questions we receive at our events are usually Admissions-related, so we've compiled a list of the top eight questions below:  

1. What is the difference between Early Admissions and Regular Admissions?
Early Admissions applicants will receive an admissions decision via e-mail by end of day on Monday, December 11, 2017. Regular Admissions applicants will receive an admissions decision via e-mail by end of day on Monday, March 12, 2018.
